Grace Tan, President of John Portman & Associates named on of 2012’s Outstanding Asian Americans in Business

At a black-tie gala hosted by the Asian American Business Development Center at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City, Grace Tan was recognized as one of this year’s Outstanding 50 Asian Americans in Business. This event, now in its 11th year, honors extraordinary Asian Americans from across the United States, representing an array of ethnic backgrounds. The award committee identifies and selects individuals with outstanding leadership, vision and accomplishments who have built a successful business career and/or have distinguished themselves in their community. “The award not only honors individuals, but serves to encourage the development of talent and leadership of Asian Americans,” said John Wang, president of AABDC.

Ms. Tan, who is of Filipino/Chinese descent, serves as President of John Portman & Associates (PORTMAN), an international architectural design firm with offices in Atlanta, GA USA and Shanghai, China. She has been with PORTMAN since 1985, rising through the ranks to her present position. As President, she is responsible for determining, implementing and enforcing any operational policies required for the effective and efficient operations of PORTMAN, leading the yearly business planning and strategic direction of the company, reviewing and approving professional and vendor contracts, establishing and maintaining the profitability criteria for projects and the firm, managing the issues, structure and use of the firm’s human resources, and overseeing the firm’s marketing strategy. In addition, she oversees the production and coordination of all competition proposals and presentations, and keeps in close contact with PORTMAN’S China office. Fluent in Chinese, English, and Filipino, Ms. Tan interfaces extremely well with the firm’s international clients as well as affiliated architects in the local design institutes, all while contributing solid design and production expertise to the projects she oversees.
