John Portman Recognized with AIA Atlanta’s Presidential Citation
In recognition of John Portman’s legacy of creating places, architecture, art and sculpture
John C. Portman, Jr. was awarded the AIA Presidential Citation at the annual “Build Something Great Awards” on Thursday night. Awarded by the AIA Atlanta chapter president, William Carpenter, FAIA, PhD, this award is given to an individual who has made a substantial contribution to the community and the profession through the supporting of AIA Atlanta’s goals and ideals. Jack Portman, FAIA, accepted the Presidential Citation on behalf of his father, which was followed by a standing ovation.
The groundbreaking projects of world-renowned architect and developer, John C. Portman, Jr. helped define and energize Atlanta from the 1960s to today, with AmericasMart, the Peachtree Center complex, a massive renovation to 230 Peachtree in downtown; Northpark Town Center and Riverwood in the perimeter area. Most recent projects Coda and Anthem Technology Center in Midtown will help redefine the center of Tech Square while the latest design for the Hotel at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport will enhance traveler’s experience when arriving in Atlanta. Portman strives for an architecture that is more than just the design of a building, but rather a creation of a place for people, that consciously uplifts a person through an enhancement of the human condition.
