Top 10 highlights from 2017

From project announcements to visually arresting constructions being completed, we highlight the top 10 milestones from 2017.

1. Union Tower West Opens
The ribbon-cutting ceremony was held in February for the $100 million mixed-use project located at 1801 Wewatta Street, situated in the Lower Downtown Denver (LoDo) District. The LEED-Certified building in Denver’s Union Station neighborhood features a 180-room Hotel Indigo® hotel and 100,000 square feet of class-A office space.

2. 615 South College opens & receives LEED Gold 
The celebration was held in May where Charlotte business leaders and commercial real estate professionals joined representatives of JPA to commemorate the occasion. Later this year the project was awarded LEED Gold Certification.

3. Portman Sculpture at Loudermilk Park
The 12-foot tall stainless steel sculpture by John Portman was unveiled at a public ceremony at Loudermilk Park in the Buckhead district of Atlanta, Georgia in May. The Buckhead Community Improvement District said Portman’s sculpture “symbolizes Buckhead’s past and future success.

4. Coda celebrates the end of excavation 
Due to complete in 2019, the team celebrated the end of excavation in August alongside Portman Holdings, Georgia Tech, and DPR Construction.

5. Portman’s America book launch 
John Portman & Associates celebrated the launch of architectural photographer Iwan Baan’s new photographs commissioned for the recent book, Portman’s America and Other Speculations (edited by GSD dean Mohsen Mostafavi), which visually documents our unique history spanning over six decades. Filled with Mr. Portman’s iconic projects, the book is a beautiful visual representation of John Portman’s rich history and influence on Atlanta, culture, and the rest of the country.

6. Peachtree Center added to GA register of Historic Places 
With the first project, the Atlanta Furniture Mart opened in 1961, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources approved Peachtree Center in August to be added to the Georgia Register of Historic Places as the Peachtree Center Historic District.

7. Announcing Anthem Technology Center 
Anthem Technology Center joins the highly anticipated Coda as an innovative Portman design enriching Tech Square in the ever booming Midtown Atlanta.

8. Capella Shanghai Jian Ye Li’s grand opening 
JPA representatives joined the October grand opening celebration in Shanghai of the complex that includes hotel, residential, retail, restaurants, spa and office functions.

9. John C. Portman recognized with Presidential Citation by AIA Atlanta
The award is given to an individual who has made a substantial contribution to the community and the profession through the supporting of AIA Atlanta’s goals and ideals. Jack Portman, FAIA, accepted the Presidential Citation on behalf of his father, which was followed by a standing ovation.

10. BRIC II tops out 
BRIC, named for its location along BRoadway and PacfIC Highway, will combine a newly opened dual-branded select service hotel consisting of a SpringHill Suites and Residence Inn with the new InterContinental Hotel.
