Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund opens

SHANGHAI, CHINA (18 April 2011) – John Portman & Associates is pleased to congratulate Hilton Worldwide on the opening of the Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund. The project restores, preserves and updates the former Shanghai Club at historic No. 2 Bund. Luxury amenities return the building to its original glory, while transforming it into the grand public spaces for the new Waldorf Astoria.

Behind the restored Shanghai Club, a new tower rises, fronting onto Sichuan Road. The tower features three levels of public spaces including a lobby lounge, meeting rooms, and health club and spa, in addition to 20 floors of luxury guest rooms. Parking and building services are located on four levels below grade. A grand plaza links the tower with the historic club building. The two-building hotel provides 272 guest rooms and suites, along with dining, ballroom, meeting and public spaces.

John Portman & Associates served as the design architects for the project, providing architectural design services prior to handing off to the local design institute, as is the custom in China. The firm’s scope of work included creating a design to complement the preservation of the historic Shanghai Club and designing the new guest room tower as well as the grand plaza linking the two.
