Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the bund wins HA+D award for design excelllence

Recognized in the Refurbishment, Re-use and Renovation Category

This project preserves and updates the former Shanghai Club at historic No. 2 Bund. Luxury amenities return the building to its original glory, while transforming it into sumptuous suites and grand public spaces for the new Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund. Behind the restored Shanghai Club, a new tower was sensitively added fronting onto Sichuan Road. The tower features three levels of public spaces in addition to 20 floors of luxury guestrooms. A courtyard links the two buildings, reminiscent of the famed “meet-me-at-the-corridor” walkway that joins the two towers of the Waldorf Astoria brand icon – the Waldorf Astoria New York.

The biggest challenge was to create a seamless guest experience between the two buildings. To functionally link the new tower to the historic building, enclosed space is provided at ground level and one level below grade. Transitioning from one building to the other, guests will notice similarities between the two, through design motifs, patterned textiles and even the furnishings selected by interior design firm, Hirsch Bedner Associates. The project team was successful in creating a graceful progression in ambience and design that honors the heritage of the historic club as well as the modern classic spirit of The Bund today, and also remains true to the Waldorf Brand Promise.
